Deepest Darkest Art was proud to host Barry Salzman’s first solo show in South Africa, which was well received by critics and collectors alike. As a naturalized American, Salzman’s work, shot across the Southern United States, revisits the seminal body of work made by Robert Frank in 1955-56, The Americans, featuring a series of images that offer an immigrant’s perspective on the unfulfilled promise of the American Dream. In his accompanying essay, Ashraf Jamal, a leading commentator on contemporary art in South Africa writes, “Salzman’s viewpoint and felt sense of the world asks us to cherish what we mistakenly imagine to be superfluous.”
